KARST-9

THE OPERATOR IS MISSING. HIS RECORDS REMAIN.

November 1987. Deep inside an undisclosed mountain range, KARST-9 continues to operate after one of its maintenance operators disappears. Beyond its guarded entrance lie research rooms, underground railway lines and restricted passages. Few of those working inside know the full purpose of the installation.

Trains arrive before their departure is recorded. Voices carry through abandoned passages. Rooms listed as empty show signs of occupation. The equipment is ageing, but faulty machinery cannot explain every discrepancy.

Elias Voss has been sent to find out what happened to the missing man.

ELIAS VOSS

Voss arrives on 3 November 1987 to take a position in Auxiliary Systems. A skilled technician with debts at home and a fatal accident behind him, he accepts the generous pay before learning where he will be stationed.

His official work is to keep the facility running. His private assignment is to find Martin Brenner, the operator he replaces, establish whether he is alive and recover his personal maintenance notes. He is instructed to leave the research programme alone.

Following Brenner’s traces takes him beyond routine repairs and into records that contradict what he sees. Years earlier, trusting an unverified reading cost someone his life. Inside KARST-9, he has reason to check everything himself.

THE FIELD JOURNAL

Voss’s journal unfolds through twelve chapters spanning November and December 1987. Dated and timed entries follow his shifts, encounters and discoveries, written from pocket notes, duty records and the details he remembers after work.

His observations are precise but incomplete. A sound heard during a night shift, an amended report or an unfamiliar name may acquire meaning only days later. Technical problems sit alongside fatigue, personal memories and the growing difficulty of knowing whom to trust.

Across 96 illustrated pages, the journal combines his account with internal reports, personnel records, technical sketches and cinematic views of the facility. Flooded railway lines, white research rooms, lifts and sealed thresholds gradually reveal the geography—and the hidden workings—of the mountain.

READ INSIDE THE WORLD OF KARST-9

The companion desktop app surrounds the journal with three animated locations from the facility: the flooded Lower Transit, the equipment-filled Monitoring Room and the Ventilation Tunnel.

Each location features original music and its own environmental soundscape. Adjust music and ambience independently, settle into a location and open the journal to continue reading.

You can change your surroundings whenever you wish, or leave a scene running while you work or unwind. The app brings the facility’s light, movement and sound into the room around you, accompanying the story at your own pace.
